Working alongside Emmaus, I have re-purposed scrap materials and produced a stool from wood, bio-resin, and personal objects.
Emmaus houses and provides work for Companions – people who were once homeless. I wanted to give each Companion the opportunity to have a focused project throughout their time at Emmaus. Having a sense of purpose was something that I felt was an important factor in the wellbeing of each Companion. Throughout their stay, Companions could collect small objects that they felt represented them. When they were leaving Emmaus, these objects would be encapsulated into a resin insert in their stool. Collecting these items can help them regain their sense of identity, something that may have been lost due to their circumstances. At the end of their stay, a ‘leaving ritual’ takes place, where the stool is handed over to the newest Companion to mark the start of a new chapter.
